evocative portraits of 100 of Spartanburg's most creative citizens,
and the artists themselves put their stories and muses to words.
Local gallery owner Edward Emory curates a selection of artwork—
one piece per artist—and captures a century of achievement in the

100 Spartanburg Artists Exhibit at
Upstairs Artspace in Tryon, NC
March 16th - April 28th, reception on March 17th, 5-8 p.m.

What small southern city can boast of 100 visual artists of exceptional merit? The
Upstairs Artspace in Tryon, NC answers the question with "Artists Among Us:
100 Faces of Art in Spartanburg." The exhibit opens March 16 and continues
through April 28.
The inspiration behind the exhibit is a beautiful coffee table book of the same title
published last November by Hub City Press. The book is the collaboration of
Edward Emory, writer and editor, and Stephen Stinson, photographer. Emory,
who owns and operates Carolina Gallery with his wife Shannon, selected the 100
artists according to their individual talents, achievements and contributions
towards promoting Spartanburg as an arts destination.
The Upstairs Artspace is presenting work by each of the 100 artists in all three
of its galleries. The range of art includes painting, drawing, printmaking,
photography, mixed media, sculpture, woodturning, and ceramic and fiber art.
"We want to familiarize our audience--especially people north of Tryon--with
Spartanburg's many outstanding artists," says Margaret Curtis, Exhibits
Committee chair.
A public reception for the artists is Saturday, March 17, 5-8 p.m. where copies
of the book will be available for purchase and signing by the artists. Emory will
give an informal talk, "Spartanburg Spells ART!," on Tuesday, March 27, 7 p.m.
The events are free.

Artspace is located at 49 S. Trade Street. Hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 12-6
p.m., Sunday, 12-4 p.m.
